Traditional stencils are cut from a thick hard plastic and the design needs to have bridges to keep the image from falling apart. These bridges will automatically form part of your design when you use the stencil. Because of these bridges we are very limited when it comes to design and generally designs are kept simple with little to no detail.
Silkscreen stencils on the other hand are made of a thin vinyl like material and designs can be very detailed and intricate because no bridges are necessary to keep the design in place. Silkscreen stencils only recently made its mark in the crafting industry but has been around for many-many years. Silk-screening is a well-known technique in the textile industry and is used to put unique designs or patterns onto fabric. You can use silkscreen stencils on fabric, paper, wood, leather, cakes, cookies and so much more.
